It's the last week of November, which means there's one more chance to catch our current Austin360 Artist of the Month, Western Youth. They'll be at Stay Gold on Friday, Nov. 30, sharing a bill with Greg Loftus & the Ten Ninety Nines and Ben Ballinger.
In the weeks leading up to and after our Austin360 cover story on Western Youth in the American-Statesman on Nov. 2, we caught the band on several occasions at a variety of Austin music venues. Here's a video recap showing some of the highlights:
The excerpts include five songs from the band's self-titled debut album, with versions of "The King Is Gone" bookending the video from performances at Little Longhorn Saloon and Spider House Ballroom. Also featured are "Hangin' On" at Waterloo Records, "Dying on the Vine" at the Continental Club, "Lost the War" with Jaimee Harris at Spider House, "Norah" with Bonnie Montgomery at Threadgill's, and two tunes from a Thanksgiving-Eve set of Tom Petty material at Stay Gold.
The video also captures the transitional phase the band has been in while we've featured them as our Artist of the Month. More recent shows include guitarists Eric Tessmer (Continental Club), Travis Deardorff (Waterloo Records) and Brian Patterson (Stay Gold), while the record-release show from late September at Spider House documents the band's last days with co-founding guitarist Matthew Gregg and bassist Sean Spiller. Singer-songwriters Taylor Williams and Graham Weber remain out front, with drummer Brian Bowe and keyboardist Sam Powell supporting and new bassist Chris Spencer now on board.
