OUT THIS WEEK
Shy Beast, “Leave Me/Let Me” EP. On their second three-song set in the past two years, Shy Beast further serves notice that they could be an Austin pop breakout band. Singer/keyboardist Mariclaire Glaeser has an instantly appealing voice that brings to mind Molly Rankin of Canadian rising stars Alvvays, especially on the buoyant, ornamental opener “Monday/Sunday.” Second track “Leave Me Be” mines a more soulful, swinging groove, while “Flowers Gone” rings with a slight twinge of psychedelia. Release show Nov. 24 at Spider House Ballroom. Here’s the track “Flowers Grow”:
Superfonicos, “Suelta” EP. Writing about their appearance last month at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Austin360’s Deborah Sengupta Stith noted: “The Austin band has been hyping audiences with their hip-switching rhythms for roughly two years and the release of their excellent new EP is sure to broaden their reach. Though their music draws heavily from traditional Colombian rhythms and melodies, they also blend in elements of psych rock, funk and soul.” In-store Nov. 27 at Waterloo Records; headlining Austin’s New Year at Auditorium Shores Dec. 31. Here’s the band playing the title track in an Austin360 Studio Session earlier this year:
