You don't have to wait until Halloween to get to know Austin's spirits.
In the next episode of "I Love You So Much: The Austin360 Podcast," which is coming out Tuesday, you can hear several ghost-and-booze stories from Katie Harrison, who works with the Houston-based Nightly Spirits, a pub crawl/ghost tour company that hosts events in more than a dozen cities across the country, including Austin.
These tours, which mix history, booze and all things supernatural, take place Friday and Saturday nights in Austin, and though they start at Buffalo Billiards, the groups stop at several historical and possibly haunted bars downtown, including Russian House and the Gatsby. At each location, guests enjoy a cocktail and a hair-raising tale based on stories from patrons, newspaper records and the bartenders who are the last ones to leave these establishments, many of which are more than 100 years old.
Harrison told "I Love You So Much" co-host Addie Broyles and Austin360 beer/wine/spirits writer Arianna Auber about her own personal interactions with the unknown, and they talked about the connection between liquid spirits and the supposedly haunted ones. The company also offers tours in Dallas, San Antonio and Houston, as well as Washington, Chicago and Denver.
In keeping with the Halloween theme, Austin360 staffers Emily Quigley, Katey Psencik and Joe Gross share their love of all the things that tickle your spine in a recommendation segment we call "A Toast." Emily has been enjoying the Netflix show "The Haunting of Hill House," which is loosely based on the Shirley Jackson novel, and the new remake of "Halloween." Katey shared her love of a podcast called "Lore" and two new TV shows: "The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell" and "Creeped Out." Joe talked about his recent interview with Kier-La Janisse, the former Austinite and Fantastic Fest advisory board member who studies and has written about gender and horror films.
