In a move of deeply rooted familial synergy, Antone’s Nightlcub will start serving Houston-based Antone’s Famous Po’ boys. Clifford Antone’s uncle, Jalal Antone, founded Antone’s Import Company in 1962. The Italian cold cut sandwiches became legendary in Houston, while Clifford was in Austin launching Texas’ home of the blues.
The company was eventually sold, but the new company continues the tradition of selling sub sandwiches dressed with chow chow on a soft roll. Antone’s Famous Po’Boys recently moved back into the Austin market, selling their sandwiches at H-E-B stores throughout Central Texas, and now the sandwiches have a proper home with family ties.
Beginning this Saturday, which just happens to be the late, great Clifford’s birthday, the club at 305 W. Fifth St. will serve Antone’s Original, Super, Turkey and Tuna po’boys. They will be sold out of the record store the front of the club from noon to 2 a.m. daily.
Legacy Restaurants, which bought the Antone’s po’boy brand in 2005, is also exploring further expansion of its wholesale business into other regions including North Texas and San Antonio.
