With the threat of rain, this weekend might not be the best time for racing, but at least we'll have prime whiskey weather.
Which is fortuitous: A U.S. whiskey distillery offers the place you should be after watching Lewis Hamilton and other F1 drivers zoom around Circuit of the Americas during the U.S. Grand Prix. The race returns to the track just outside of Austin starting Friday.
Utah's High West Distillery also comes to Austin for a pop-up during F1 weekend, transforming Half Step on Rainey Street into the High West Saloon with tastings of limited and rare whiskeys, cocktails created by the Half Step bar team, complimentary tattoos and live music. The distillery's Whiskey Marks the Spot event kicks off at 7 p.m. on Thursday and continues 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.
Half Step, one of Austin's most lauded cocktail bars, was an obvious choice to High West when choosing the site of the distillery's pop-up, according to a news release. For one thing, High West's bourbon and rye options are a constant on the bar shelf at the Rainey Street bungalow bar.
“High West has been a staple whiskey for us since day one,” Steven Robbins, Half Step general manager, said in the news release. “We couldn’t think of a better reward for our customers than an immersion in all things High West for F1 weekend.”
The three-day Whiskey Marks the Spot pop-up doubles as the official Texas launch of one of High West's most sought-after whiskeys: A Midwinter Night’s Dram 2018. If you aren't able to get your hands on this limited release, at $100 a bottle, the event is your chance to try it at no cost. And you'll want at least a couple of sips. A Midwinter's Night Dram is a blend of straight rye whiskeys that was finished in port and French oak barrels and tastes like something you want to drink while getting cozy in front of a fire.
To attend the completely free pop-up, RSVP at highwestaustin.splashthat.com by midnight on Wednesday.
