The Mexican lotería game, similar to American bingo, has been updated a time or two to be more in sync with today’s pop culture and gender norms — including with a California artist’s lotería prints geared toward millennials — but a new version will probably mean the most to Austinites.
Local restaurant chain Baby Acapulco has made lotería featuring Austin icons that anyone who lives in and loves Texas’ capital city will recognize. The game debuted to enormous success at Baby Acapulco’s Arboretum location last month, and the restaurant has set another game night for tomorrow, Aug. 15.
Baby Acapulco’s representative, Lisa Jaynes, said that the debut of Baby A’s very own lotería in July completely booked up the patio, drawing excited customers who came for “the much anticipated game” but also enjoyed DJ beats and the creations of a balloon artist.
Many of the featured cards in Baby A’s lotería game are commonly recognized items such as ‘jalapeños’ and ‘la piñata,” but they’re all, in some way, relevant to the brand of the beloved Austin restaurant, which now has five locations across the city. And some of the lotería items will pretty significant to locals in particular.
“We came up with this concept a little over a year ago and decided that we would create and personalize this game to integrate our Baby A’s brand with local Austin staples, i.e. the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue (El Estatua), our Purple margarita (El Morado) and our hipster culture (El Hippie) to name a few,” Jaynes said via email.
The game is even patented, she said, to be sure that the restaurant is truly offering a “one-of-a-kind lotería game.”
Baby Acapulco has created its very own version of loteria, with images that many an Austinite will recognize.
For the next game night on Aug. 15, the Arboretum-area location will have exciting prizes to give away to winners of lotería: food, Baby Acapulco merchandise, Round Rock Express baseball tickets, Main Event gift cards and the grand prize of a family four-pack of tickets to Schlitterbahn. (Since school is around the corner or has already started for some Austin families, the water park could be summer’s last hurrah.)
