The State Fair of Texas, running through Oct. 22 this year, has reliably become a place where you can try some of the strangest food combinations imaginable — such oddball items like a tamale donut, deep-fried Froot Loops and a funnel cake bacon queso burger.
These and other crazy-sounding fair foods were all recent edible competitors in the 2017 Big Texas Choice Awards, a big part of the yearly state fair. The lone alcoholic option, an Oreo beer, was a semi-finalist but did not win (though that burger sure did!). That hasn’t stopped people from trying the beer, of course, because that’s a combination of literally two of the greatest things in this world.
It’s made with an American milk stout as its base and has plenty of the Oreo cookie to chew while you drink, according to the Dallas Morning News. In addition to an Oreo floating on top, “the cup is rimmed with Oreo cream filling and chocolate Oreo bits. Its creator says the beer has essences of ‘vanilla, brown sugar and cream, with hints of roasted coffee,’" according to the Dallas newspaper.
Reactions to it on social media are decidedly mixed, but it sounds like some people wouldn’t mind if it became more than just a one-off created for the fair.
For that, we might have to go to breweries like the Veil Brewing in Richmond, Virginia, which made a chocolate milk stout with Oreo earlier this year — conditioning the beer on hundreds of pounds of Oreos.
In the meantime, the State Fair of Texas’ Oreo beer and other weirdo concoctions are still being sold in Dallas. We’ve got two more weekends to plan a day trip. Who’s in?
