National Rosé Day — June 10 — could not come at a better time. Temperatures in Texas are climbing, and it’s prime time for us to enjoy a refreshing glass of rosé, right now a red-hot style of wine in the midst of a heyday in Texas and pretty much everywhere else.
Or better yet: How about a glass of frosé? Frozen rosé, that is. Frozen cocktails have also been on the rise, as I noted in this column last summer, and the easy-drinking qualities of rosé have made it a common ingredient in these drinks.
Here are a handful of places to find frosé in Austin, as well as a recipe to follow in case you want to try making it yourself.
Hotel San Jose
The hip South Congress hotel was the first place I noticed to offer frosé regularly on the menu. It’s made with lemon juice and fresh lemonade, and sipping it outside on the leafy patio while a light breeze ruffles your hair is pretty much one of the most sublime, distinctly Austin experiences you could ask for.
Revelry Kitchen & Bar
Seasonal ingredients are a must at the Revelry bar on East Sixth Street, where beverage director Alana Zanello recently created a summer cocktail menu full of fresh, fruit-forward cocktails like the Frosé All Day, made with lemon and strawberry puree. Sip on one at the restaurant’s newly revamped Sunday brunch.
This barbecue restaurant on East Cesar Chavez Street specializes in some trendy booze: on-tap, barrel-aged and frozen cocktails. In addition to the frozen Eastside Margarita, there’s a Frosé made with grape fruit juice, vodka and a secret liqueur that the bartenders keep to themselves. Whatever it is, it’s clearly delicious.
Just in time for National Rosé Day, the sophisticated South Lamar eatery is launching a frozen rosé special starting this weekend and available only during brunch.
That frosé drink will also be a big highlight of June 17’s inaugural Rosé Soirée. Savor 30 rosé wines, from crave-worthy bubbles to funkier wines, along with light bites and live beats from a DJ. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door.
Azul Rooftop Pool Bar & Lounge
Atop the downtown Westin hotel, locals and guests alike can relax poolside while admiring stunning views of the city — all while sipping drinks worthy of such a luxurious setting. Azul makes the Raspberry F’rosé with sparkling rosé, Grey Goose Vodka, raspberry, peach and other fresh juices and adds the frozen potion to a wine glass.
But if you’ve got a pretty cozy patio yourself and don’t want to drift too far from it, we’ve got a solution. Try your hand at this frosé recipe from Josh Cellars in California, which produces a rosé as a blend of barbera, moscato and syrah grapes, giving the summer sipper aromas of strawberries, white flowers and stone fruit.
1 bottle Josh Cellars Rosé (or any rosé of your choosing)
4 oz. Licor 43
2 oz. lemon juice
½ cup fresh strawberries hulled and chopped
Pour Josh Cellars Rosé into an ice cube tray and freeze for 3-4 hours, overnight preferred.
In a blender place Josh Cellars Rosé Ice Cubes, Licor 43, lemon and strawberries and blend on medium speed until smooth. Pour into wine glass and garnish with a fresh strawberry.
(Tip: If rosé is not frozen very well, add ice cubes as needed to blender to get desired consistency.)
