Scene report: Valerie June talks ACL weekend 2

Editor’s note: This article was originally published October 5, 2013

Just talked to Valerie June, who said her set for weekend two of ACL Fest will be different from what she played Saturday. She’s bringing in an all-female backing band from Memphis, with a violinist, cellist and two horn players.

She also said she’ll change up the setlist, and songs will include Carter Family tunes and new originals.

“I honestly don’t know what songs I’m going to do,” she said late Saturday afternoon. ” I like to go with the energy of the crowd and respond.”

She said the band is so well rehearsed, they can decide on the spot what songs feel right.

June plays again at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, on the BMI stage, plus an after-show Oct. 11 with Junip at Antone’s.
