New downtown dance club Kingdom puts 50,000 watts behind its music

A new "boutique dance club" has joined the downtown mix, playing hit music on a custom-designed, 50,000-watt sound system.

Kingdom is carved out of what used to be office space in a historic building at 103 E. Fifth St.

The nightclub is open 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

"What sets us apart is our sound and lighting," said general manager Garrett Boyd. "We focused on making the perfect musical experience for the customer."

Ceilings and walls are lined with foam insulation, Boyd said, to enhance sound quality.

At 4,000 square feet, Kingdom can accommodate about 300 people. A wooden dance floor takes up the bulk of the space, though limited seating is available.

"We tried to keep it pretty simple," he said. "When people come in here, it's to dance, and they're pretty into it."

The bar has around 20 beers on tap, Boyd said, about half of them brewed in Texas. A number of specialty cocktails are also available.

Local DJ Jason Jenkins plays the first, third and fifth Friday of each month, while Francis Preve is on the schedule the second and fourth Fridays.

DJs Gabriel and Dresden will play a free show for the club's grand opening Sept. 2.

"This will be a very intimate show," Boyd said. "It will be a different experience than most people have seen with them."
