The Alamo Drafthouse is turning 20 and it is here to party

It was 20 years ago today (OK, not actually today) that Tim and Karrie League  opened the first Alamo Drafthouse on Colorado St.

Over the next two decades, the Alamo Drafthouse rewrote the rules for movie-going.

There had been Drafthouse-style movie theaters before but none with the Leagues’ mix of good food, clever booze, enthusiastic cinephilia, canny genre bookings and a fanatical no-talking policy that is increasingly the industry standard. There are now Drafthouses in 28 locations.

MOVIE REVIEW: The tuneful ‘Baby Driver’ has the need for speed

20th anniversary celebrations kicked off May 25 with a party at the Drafthouse Ritz. “Baby Driver” screened. Everyone got a sword.

Here are four forthcoming events that will keep the party going (there will likely not be swords).

Also look for a line of 20th anniversary apparel via Drafthouse’s merchandise arm, Mondo. First up? The 2017 Badass Cinema T-shirt featuring Pam Grier. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this shirt will go to Project Angel Heart, a Denver-based charitable organization Grier favors. There will also be a commemorative beer called “Action! Anniversary Ale” from Austin Beerworks.

Head over to for ticket details.
