UPDATE: The Sound and Cinema titles have been revealed!
There are two kinds of summer film series in the fine city of Austin: The kind where you sit in an air-conditioned theater and watch movies curated around a particular theme, and the kind where you sit on a blanket after sundown and, well, watch movies curated around a particular theme. Our town is full of both.
First, some indoor ones:
The Paramount Summer Classic Film Series. Pretty much the big kahuna of Austin summer film series with about 110 movies on tap until Sept. 1. Tickets are $12, and movies cater to both adults and kids.
Alamo Drafthouse Kids Club. Family movies for cheap. All Kids Camp screenings are pick your price - $1, $3, $5 - with 100 percent of ticket sales donated to local nonprofits. This summer's beneficiaries are Carrying Hope, CARY, Dove Springs Swims by Forklift Danceworks, Friends of the Children - Austin, Sammy's House, Texas Book Festival and United Way of Greater Austin.
Flix Jr. Flix. Look for $2 children’s movies at 11 a.m. Wednesdays.
Regal Summer Movie Express. Tickets are $1 for children’s movies at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Cinemark Summer Movie Clubhouse. Check it out: $1 movies (or $5 for all 10 in the series) 10 a.m. Monday through Thursday.
Sky Cinemas presents the Free Family Film Series. Perennial family favorites and newer family fare every Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. through Aug. 15. Admission is free; tickets are available one week prior to the screening date on a first-come, first-served basis. You must visit the cinema in person to pick up a ticket. Limit 10 tickets per person.
Here are some outdoor events:
Long Center Sound and Cinema Series. There will be food trucks, music and bands on the Long Center lawn.
July 11: “Wayne's World” with music from Billy King & The Bad Bad Bad
July 25: “Grease” with music from Huggy & the Feel Goodz
Aug. 1: “Mean Girls” with music from Go Fever
Aug. 15: “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” with music from Rattlesnake Milk
Bring a refillable water bottle and blanket or lawn chair; no booze allowed. Leashed pets are welcome (but do you really want to expose your dog to loud movies?) Food trucks open at 6 p.m., music at 7:30, movie after sundown.
Austin Parks Foundation Movies in the Park. Various movies at various parks throughout the season.
Lakeway Movies in the Park. Free movies in the Lakeway City Park June 15, July 13, July 27 and Aug. 10. No dogs allowed.
Deep Eddy Movie Nights. The movies are free, but you still have to pay the normal entry fee to get into the pool. No word yet on the schedule (which we will add when it becomes available).
Community Cinema & Amphitheater. Mobile Loaves & Fishes partners with the Alamo Drafthouse to show free movies every Friday night until July 27 at Community First! Village, 9031 Hog Eye Road.
101X Summer Cinema Series. This series has moved to Republic Square Park this year. The free movies start at sundown and take place every other Thursday -- June 7, June 21, July 12, July 26, Aug. 9.
