Twenty years ago today, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (or “Sorcerer’s Stone” for U.S. readers) was released, and this most important anniversary is not going unnoticed by Facebook.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, the social media site is delivering a few magical surprises for users of its mobile app only. Type out one of the names of the four Hogwarts houses — Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, of course — and these words will take on the color of their respective house. The same goes for “Harry Potter” characters. Harry’s name, for instance, shows up red.
But that’s not all the mischief Facebook has managed. If you click on any of these colored words once they’re posted on the site, a wand will appear on your screen and cast a spell.
Twitter isn’t missing out on the milestone, either. If you use the hashtag #HarryPotter20, a tiny icon appears: a display of Harry Potter’s trademark pair of glasses with a lightning bolt above it.
The author of the Harry Potter series, which continued last year with “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” a play on London’s West End that was subsequently released in book form, JK Rowling was one such Twitter user today with the #HarryPotter20 hashtag, sending a special message to fans of her books.
“20 years ago today a world that I had lived in alone was suddenly open to others,” she tweeted.
And thank Merlin it was.
