Oasis, Texas Brewing is hosting a party celebrating the sister cities status of Austin and the Hackney borough of London, England, with beer, food, live music and more.

A few years after Austin and the London borough of Hackney became official sister cities, two of their breweries have partnered to create a special beer that will release during South by Southwest.

Oasis, Texas Brewing and London’s Hackney Brewery have made the Cockney Cowboy Calling Hybrid Red Lager, a name that nods to Austin roots rocker Joe Ely’s relationship with the English band the Clash and their “London Calling” album.

And it’s a perfect blend of Texas and England: Cockney Cowboy, a hoppy red, was brewed with Texas-grown malt, English-grown Maris Otter malt, an English yeast strain and lagered for a month. It was also dry-hopped with delicate Opal hops and citrus-forward Centennial hops.

The beer will launch at the Lake Travis brewery at a no-badge-required party on March 11, the day London mayor Sadiq Khan arrives in town for the festival. He is a SXSW keynote speaker the following day, giving a talk about how technology and politics should mix.

Like Austin, Hackney is a thriving tech hub, which made them ideal to become sister cities. Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell signed the sister cities agreement with Hackney Mayor Jules Pipe four years ago today.

Though no SXSW badges are required to participate in the Cockney Cowboy release party, an RSVP on the Eventbrite page is requested and will get you access to beer tastings, a cash bar, food and music by Austin-based band Vision Arcade. There will also be English classic and modern Triumph motorcycles, Mini Cooper classic cars and more.

Hackney Brewery’s Jon Swain teamed up to formulate the beer with Oasis, Texas Brewing’s Brian Dwyer. It was brewed at the Lake Travis facility, but in a few months’ time, a second batch will be made at the Hackney brewery and launch during London Technology Week in mid-June. Like SXSW, it’s an event that key members of Austin’s tech and creative industries always attend.

Head to Oasis, Texas Brewing from 12 to 2 p.m. March 11 to get a taste of the transatlantic collaboration. The brewery is located in the Oasis complex at 6550 Comanche Trl.
