In tandem with the WEST Austin Studio Tour, Austin Art Alliance Austin will stage a couple of free public happenings:
• On May 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Little Stacy Park, Melissa Borrell’s installation “GloWave” will be celebrated. Borrell’s undulating sculpture is illuminated at night with blue light, a reference to nearby drought-strained Blunn Creek. Borrell’s project is part of the city’s TEMPO initiative of temporary public art projects.
• On May 17 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Republic Square Park (Guadalupe and East Fifth streets) the ever-clever art collective Ink Tank haswill present its repurposed soda vending machine rigging it to dispense (play) audio clips of sounds recorded around and indicative of Austin’s current and rapidly changing cityschape. Beyond serving to encapsulate and dispense the sounds of Austin, the vending machine will also function as a community bulletin board with cork panels installed on the sides to allow for community information flyers/posters. The vending machine will be free to operate but any money collected will be donated to local non-profits.
