Intrepid, adventurous percussion ensemble Line Upon Line is declaring its Austin home for this concert season: the Big Medium gallery at the Canopy Austin, the warehouse studio complex at 916 Springdagle Road.
Winners of 2013 Austin Critics’ Table Award for outstanding ensemble, Line Upon Line plays its first concert Friday, Oct. 4.
On the bill are two new commissions — no surprise since the Austin-based trio are avid (rabid?) supporters of new compositions and emerging composer.
The first new piece is Kate Soper’s In the Reign of Harad IV , named after a short story of the same name by Steven Milhauser. The piece weaves sounds made on wood and metal instruments blended with truncated texts from the poetry of John Keats.
Next is Ben Isaacs’s several inflections — a composition that challenges the limits of human hearing by using three partial glockenspiels to create a fragile yet volatile swarm of sound
Finally, the ensemble will play Iannis Xenakis’s rhythmic masterwork, Okho.
Future concerts will be held at Canopy on Jan. 17 and on April 25.
