Exhibit opening: ‘Between Mountains and Sea: Arts of the Ancient Andes’

9:08 p.m Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017 Arts

The environment along the Pacific coast of South America is a place of extremes — a landscape where desert meets ocean and is set off by the towering rain-filled Andean mountain range.

Gathering more than 80 historical and anthropological objects from various collections at the University of Texas, the exhibit “Between Mountains and Sea: Arts of the Ancient Andes ” uses geography as lens to illuminate the lifestyle, technological achievements and ideology of pre-Inca cultures that inhabited the coastal Andes of South America. Rare textiles and ceramic objects reveal the complexities of ancient Andean cultural history.
