Austin Symphony Orchestra announces winners of composers competition

Austin Symphony Orchestra has announced the nine winners of its 4th Annual Butler Young Composers Competition.

The Texas-wide competition is open to any composer 18 years old or younger.

Winners will have their original composition of five to seven minutes in length played by the orchestra April 10 in a concert conducted by ASO music director Peter Bay at the Long Center.

The winners are:

  • Garrett Brumley, Round Rock
  • Timothy Dow, Huntington
  • Jack Gillette, Driftwood
  • Wyatt Hahn, Cedar Park
  • Dara Li, Plano
  • Alan Mackwell, Houston
  • Jack Roberts, San Antonio
  • Michelangelo Rodriguez, Austin
  • Andrew Vara, Helotes

The ASO received 25 entrants for this year’s competition. Bay and William Lewis, ASO principal bassonist, served as judges.

Last month Austin philanthropists Sarah and Ernest Butler donated $1 million to ASO to endow the competition and concert.
