Arts ahead: “In the Next Room or the Vibrator Play”

Editor’s note: This article was originally published January 16, 2014

Costume design for the character of Mrs. Sabrina Daldry in Sarah Ruhl’s “In the Next Room or the Vibrator Play.” Costume and set design by Moria Clinton.

Ruhl’s witty modern play is set in the 1880s when doctors — using the new technology of electricity — used vibrators to treat so-called hysteria in women. “In the Next Room” centers on a doctor and his wife and how his new therapy affects their entire household.
