At 10 a.m. June 8, the city of Austin will begin taking applications from local musicians for $1,000 grants from the $1.5 million Austin Music Disaster Relief Fund, which was created by Austin City Council in late April.
According to guidelines published Wednesday by the city, the grants are intended "for Austin’s most vulnerable musicians experiencing economic hardship."
To qualify, musicians must have a verified address in one of Austin’s City Council districts, a demonstrated loss of income due to the coronavirus pandemic and less than two months of funds on hand to pay living expenses. Bank statements or other documentation will be required to demonstrate financial need.
Eligible musicians also must verify their participation in the Austin music scene with six released singles or music videos or at least two years of documentation of live performance activities in Austin.
Musicians who have already received a grant from the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund will not be eligible.
Multiple members of bands can apply for the grants individually. The city lists backup singers, DJs, drummers, singer-songwriters, drag performers and "anyone on stage performing for a public audience as part of musical performances" as eligible to apply.
According to the city’s guidelines, applications will be "sorted by identifying question to determine immediate need," and then processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Musicians are encouraged to prepare their answers and gather documentation before the application pool opens June 8. The application period will close at 5 p.m. June 12.
