Austin singer-songwriter Sara Hickman spent three hours of her Memorial Day reading the short biographies of 1,000 Americans whose deaths were attributed to the coronavirus since the pandemic began earlier this year. Hickman livestreamed the reading in a video that’s now available as an archived post of Facebook; it’s embedded below.
“It really bothered me that ... we aren’t making these deaths more real,” Hickman said at the start of the livestream, before she began reading the names. “Normally I’m a chipper, happy, outgoing person. But I want you to see my serious side, too. This is serious.“
The total number of reported deaths in the United States attributed to COVID-19 is likely to pass the 100,000 mark on Tuesday.
