All official South by Southwest Music Festival events may be canceled, but as usual, lots of unofficial day parties were in the works before the city of Austin’s March 6 cancellation of the event. Since the festival was canceled, Austin venues and promoters have been hustling to fill the void.

On Wednesday, representatives from the Red River Cultural District, along with other live music venues around the city, announced "We Can Do Magic," a series of events conjured to spark excitement during this very unusual spring break.

According to a release about the series, venues are adding hand washing and sanitizer stations and they plan to double cleaning visits and perform deep cleaning before shows.

However, remember to follow recommended safety tips if you go out: cough/sneeze into your sleeve, wash your hands for 20 seconds, don’t touch your face and if you don’t feel well and if you have a fever, please stay home. We’ll rock with you next time.

Check out our rolling list of SXSW events for an up-to-date and comprehensive look at parties happening in Austin.

OUR TOP PICKS

Friday: ATX Embassy at Antone’s. "Let's wash our hands and rock!" guitar hero and scene leader Jackie Venson wrote on Twitter just hours after the festival was canceled. Along with live band hip-hop outfit Magna Carda, she leads the bill for this free showcase that’s stacked top to bottom with top local talent. The show features sets from rock ’n’ soul acts Los Coast and Kalu & the Electric Joint; bluesman Eric Tessmer; and country crooner Croy & the Boys. The event also features complimentary barbecue sliders from Lamberts and drinks from Ranch Rider. Free. Doors at 5 p.m. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com. — D.S.S.

Friday-Saturday: Chuck Prophet & the Mission Express at Continental Club. The San Francisco rocker long ago figured out that the weekend before SXSW’s music fest kicked into gear was a great time to set up shop at the granddaddy of South Congress nightclubs. For years, these have been some of the best shows in Austin in March, even when the fest was in full swing. $22. Friday: Prophet at 10 p.m., with LeRoi Brothers at midnight. Saturday: Prophet at 8 p.m. and midnight, with Dumptruck at 10:15 p.m. 1315 S. Congress Ave. continentalclub.com. — P.B.

Friday-Monday: Music Tech Mashup at Empire. The Red River Cultural District club’s 10th annual celebration of life and art at the intersection of music and technology expands to a four-day affair, featuring music, speakers, tech demos and more. Organizers promise each day will be a "unique experience." Friday’s kickoff features electronica artist Paul Oakenfold on the big stage, while the Control Room hosts a celebration for the launch of new LGBTQ+ community app Molly Tommy. On Saturday, America’s most famous band leader and top musicologist Questlove drops in for a DJ set in the garage while excellent Austin groove theorists Trouble in the Streets lead an ElectrOrganics showcase inside. On Sunday, the club hosts a crawfish boil with White Denim and Sir Woman, the new solo project from Kelsey Wilson of Wild Child. A Monday blowout is still in the works as of this writing. There’s a limited RSVP for free entry until 7 p.m. each day, or you can skip the line with $10-$15 tickets. Check musictechmashup2020.splashthat.com for daily schedules. 606 E. Seventh St. empireatx.com. — D.S.S.

Saturday-Thursday: Rodeo Austin at Travis County Exposition Center. Austin’s other big music-related March event aasn’t shut down as of Wednesday morning, so head east to the Expo Center for a lineup that focuses on Texas country troubadours but includes a few acts that broaden the scope. Aaron Watson kicks it off on Saturday; other highlights of the two-week run include La Energia Nortena on Sunday, Ryan Bingham on Thursday, Sara Evans on March 22, Melissa Etheridge on March 24 and Robert Earl Keen on March 27. $20-$175. Concerts begin at 9 p.m. (after the rodeo event), or 5 p.m. on Sunday. 7311 Decker Lane. rodeoaustin.com. — P.B.

Sunday: Southby Cypher 2020 at Parish. Just because the festival proper has been canceled doesn’t mean this week won’t be about discovery. Get to know all the hottest artists on the ATX hip-hop scene at this beat fanatic’s bonanza of a showcase. Magna Carda, pretty boy trap artist the Teeta and recent Austin360 Artists of the Month Harry Edohoukwa and Kydd Jones take top billing, but the undercard is also packed with talent. Show up early for sets by Deezie Brown, J Soulja, Ben Buck and Mama Duke. $5. 4 p.m. doors. 214 E. Sixth St. parishaustin.com — D.S.S.

Sunday: Austin Town Hall vs. Side One, Track One at Hotel Vegas. Two of Austin’s top indie-music blogs duke it out, and music fans of all stripes come out on top. Blackillac, the raucous rap project from ATX battle champs Zeale and Phrachyze, and expressive pop artist Mobley lead an amazing roster of exceptional Austin talent. Psych-folk outfit Calliope Musicals, urgent protest punks Blxpltn and Latin pop standouts Como Las Movies will all put in appearances as part of a solid bill that’s 30 bands deep. Free. 1 p.m. gates. 1502 E. Sixth St. texashotelvegas.com. — D.S.S.

Sunday: Cyberbabes at Cheer Up Charlie’s. Boss Babes ATX presents a one-night mini-fest "amplifying the work of femme and queer musicians, DJs, performance and visual artists." Latina trap queen La Goony Chonga headlines. $5 suggested donation. Skip-the-line pass is $10. 4 p.m. doors. 900 Red River St. bossbabes.org. — D.S.S.

Monday: Mastersons at Waterloo Records. Chris Masterson and Eleanor Whitmore moved to Los Angeles recently after several years here, but their country-folk-rock music still has a natural home in Austin. They’ve been in Steve Earle’s band for a decade or so, making their own records when there’s time between tours. "No Time for Love Songs" came out last week and was produced by Shooter Jennings, who also recruited the Mastersons as backing musicians for Tanya Tucker’s recent Grammy-winning comeback album. Free. 5 p.m. 600 N. Lamar Blvd. waterloorecords.com. — P.B.

Tuesday: Ray Benson’s Birthday Bash at Paramount Theatre. Moved from its traditional GSD&M courtyard location, this annual event benefiting the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians will feature sets from Benson’s band, Asleep at the Wheel, as well as Shinyribs and more local acts to be announced. Beyond the initial allocation of tickets for the original event, more seats were scheduled to be released to the public, with prices to be announced. 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org. — P.B.

Wednesday through March 21: Sun Radio Sessions at Cosmic Coffee + Beer. The local radio station’s lineup for this four-day event looks to be strong despite SXSW fallout, with acts including Raul Malo, Margo Price and Shakey Graves apparently still on board. Look for full updated lineup details at sunradio.com/sessions. 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. each day. $20 daily donation to the Sun Radio Foundation. 121 Pickle Road. — P.B.

Wednesday through March 21: Blackfinger Fiesta De Musica at Dogwood. This 11th annual event features dozens of local acts across four days, including the Mau Mau Chaplains (Wednesday), Graveltooth (Thursday) and Hector Ward & the Big Time (March 20-21). Free. Noon to 10 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, noon to midnight March 20-21. 715 W. Sixth St. thedogwoodaustin.com. — P.B.

Wednesday through March 22: 10th annual Revival at Lucy’s Fried Chicken. One of the city’s best mid-March daytime events for the past decade, the Revival put together an especially strong lineup this year. It’s possible there may be a few dropouts before next week, but this is likely to be a top destination if Lucy’s retains most of the scheduled acts, which include Ian Moore and Tomar & the FCs on Wednesday, Dream Syndicate and Fastball on Thursday, Charlie Sexton and Shannon McNally on Friday, Shinyribs and the Iguanas on Saturday and Ray Wylie Hubbard plus Western Youth with Jaimee Harris on Sunday. Free. Noon to 7 p.m. each day. 2218 College Ave. lucysfriedchicken.com. — P.B.

Thursday: Skylab 2020 at Scholz Garten. Spaceflight Records and Mosaic Sound Collective present a 30-band, two-stage bash featuring psych outfit the Black Angels alongside heavy metal outfit the Sword, recently reunited indie band ... And They Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead and Latin funk kingpins Brownout. Golden Dawn Arkestra, Holy Wave, Residual Kid, Think No Think, Kalu and the Electric Joint and Peelander Z also are on the roster. 1607 San Jacinto Blvd. scholzgarten.com. — D.S.S.

CANCELED: Thursday: Yard Dog Presents at ABGB. Even before the SXSW cancellation, change was already in the air for this quarter-century-old day party that used to be on South Congress Avenue. When folk-art shop Yard Dog moved to East Austin recently, they partnered with ABGB to move a couple of their longstanding day events there. This one will feature Jon Langford, Churchwood, Casey Neill, Bob Schneider, Wild Seeds, Dream Syndicate, Dressy Bessy, Walter Salas-Humara and William Harries Graham & Jon Dee Graham. (ALSO CANCELED: ABGB also will host the Bloodshot Records day party that was formerly a Yard Dog mainstay on March 20, with acts including Jason Hawk Harris, Banditos and Sarah Shook & the Disarmers.) Free. Noon to 7 p.m. 1305 W. Oltorf St. theabgb.com. — P.B.

March 20: Far East Equinox at Webberville Church. Austin’s art-jazz pranksters take over the parking lot of Webberville Road Baptist Church (adjacent to the Sahara Lounge) to "celebrate the vernal equinox with music, magic and libations." The diverse bill includes sets from rising indie rockers TC Superstar and Latin funk powerhouse Superfónicos alongside punks Sailor Poon and the Minor Mishap Marching Band. $20. 4 p.m. gates. 1402 Webberville Road. See facebook.com/events/204544570727487 for more info. — D.S.S.

March 21: Young Hearts Roadside Attraction at Stay Gold. The all-day bash curated by Go Fever’s Acey Monaro features performances from explosive local pop-rock outfit Sweet Spirit; Fea, the Chicana punk outfit from Girl In A Coma’s Phanie Diaz and Jenn Alva; and Calliope Musicals. Go Fever, Kills Birds (LA), Fanclub, Lord Friday the 13th, Nevil, Credit Card and Violinda also will perform. The event includes a market featuring art, vintage and tattoo vendors and a food truck serving all-day brunch. Gates are at noon and the $10 cover ensures every band gets paid. 1910 E.
