Fun fact about us women: We have more superior olfactory centers that make us perhaps better suited to detect the range of aromas and flavor prevalent in some of our favorite beverages, from wine to whiskey. So you can bet that we will enjoy one of those drinks this weekend, during a celebration of International Women’s Day.

In fact, a couple of Austin breweries and more than 30 Austin bars and restaurants will have beers and wines available specifically in honor of the day commemorating women. International Women’s Day is always on March 8, Sunday this year, but all of these boozy offerings will stick around for the entire month, or until they run out.

Drink pink, sort of

First up are release parties of two Pink Boots collaboration beers. Every year, the Pink Boots Society — a nationwide organization that assists and encourages women in the beer industry — teams up with breweries across the country to make a beer featuring a special Pink Boots hop blend. Many of them brew it on International Women’s Day with women in the industry, but some choose to release it this weekend instead.

St. Elmo Brewing and Circle Brewing are among those who produced the Pink Boots beer early, and they are debuting each one this weekend with International Women’s Day events. The Pink Boots hop blend features Azacca, El Dorado, Idaho Gem and Loral hops.

• Caroline Hoppy Pale Ale: St. Elmo’s Pink Boots beer releases Friday at the South Austin taproom as a nod to Caroline Wallace, the deputy director of the Texas Craft Brewers Guild. Ten percent of the day’s beer sales will be donated to Pink Boots Society. Plus, at 8 p.m., St. Elmo hosts a special edition of its monthly comedy show, Who's On Tap? For The Girls.

• Pink Velvet Collaboration IPA: Circle’s version of the Pink Boots beer, which you can sip with limited-edition pink velvet koozies, debuts on Sunday with an all-day bash at the North Austin brewery. The day starts early with a yoga session. There will also be local female-owned and -operated vendors on-site, with food available from Paprika ATX. Six-packs of Pink Velvet will be available to go.

The wondrous women in wine

Prefer wine over beer? Well, you’re in luck: More than 30 Austin bars and restaurants, including Aviary Wine & Kitchen, Emmer & Rye, Juliet Italian Kitchen and Bufalina, will feature women-made wines throughout all of March, leading up to the Wonder Women of Wine Conference at the end of the month.

Their wine lists will make room for “underrepresented winemakers, offering by-the-glass women-made wines,” according to a news release. These local spots will also donate a portion of the proceeds to the Austin-based conference, which debuted last year as a means to bring about equality in the wine industry. It returns March 28 and 29 and is open to wine enthusiasts of all kinds.

If you want to enjoy a bottle at home rather than out and about, you can do that, too. Throughout the month, Twin Liquors is spotlighting women-owned wines in all of its stores across Texas.

Additional participating bars and restaurants with women-focused wine lists this month include the Brewer’s Table, Pitchfork Pretty, Josephine House and Odd Duck.
