Art

“Barnacles of Existence.” In this Women and Their Work show, artist Jill Bedgood creates mixed media sculpture and installations that contemplate the dualities in life, the cyclical nature of existence and the weight of memory. Bedgood's artwork functions as contemporary memento mori, asking us to consider why we value our possessions and their persistence through time after our own lives end. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday, noon to 6 p.m. Saturday through April 21. 1710 Lavaca St. 512-477-1064, womenandtheirwork.org

Deb Olin Unferth at BookPeople. “Barn 8” is an exuberant and potent novel by a writer at the height of her powers. In the book, two auditors for the U.S. egg industry go rogue and conceive a plot to steal a million chickens in the middle of the night — an entire egg farm’s worth of animals. Unferth comes to BookPeople to join in conversation with author Elizabeth McCracken at this book event. Afterward, she’ll sign copies of “Barn 8.” 7 p.m. March 9. Free. 603 N.
