Val Kilmer is expanding the reach of his Los Angeles-based art studio and gallery — in Austin.

HelMel Studios, founded by the "Top Gun" actor, is partnering with Austin artistic hub Mosaic Sound Collective to give creatives a chance to showcase their work in both cities, according to a news release. To kick off the partnership, the two organizations will host events this March in Austin, just in time for South by Southwest.

The events kick off on March 12, when Kilmer makes an appearance at the Texas Film Awards. Mosaic also will host a Sunday brunch with Kilmer at Alamo Drafthouse’s Slaughter Lane theater (5701 W. Slaughter Lane) at 1 p.m. March 15. (Details on admission have not yet been released.)

Kilmer’s art will be on display at Mosaic Sound Collective’s East Austin campus (6400 FM 969) until March 20; viewing will be by appointment only.

Kilmer also will host a day-to-night party, "Skylab 2020," from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m March 19 at Scholz Garten (1607 San Jacinto Blvd.). The event, a collaboration with Spaceflight Records, will feature 26 Austin artists.

Expect performances from the Black Angels, … And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Golden Dawn Arkestra, Holy Wave, Residual Kid, Think No Think, Kalu and the Electric Joint, Löwin, the Sideshow Tragedy, Croy and the Boys, Buffalo Hunt, Galactic Protector, Ponytrap, the Human Circuit, Como Las Movies and others. Matt Pinfield, former VJ for MTV and host of alternative music show "120 Minutes," will be the special guest.

Dan Redman, founder of Mosaic Sound Collective, said in a statement that both Helmel and Mosaic share a mission to build community through collaboration.

"After working for so many years to build Mosaic, it's amazing to find another organization that shares our mission and passion," Redman said in the news release. "When Val came for a tour of Mosaic, he picked up a sledgehammer from my office and carried it through the space, describing how we can disrupt the music industry together. I'll never forget that."

"This is the type of work that makes you feel like you are truly making an impact and cementing your legacy," said Kilmer in a statement. "At HelMel and Mosaic we are tilling the soil, planting the seeds, and nurturing the growth. The arts and education are our orchards."
