Texas Roller Derby, the only banked track roller derby league in Austin, is hosting one of its twice-a-year tryouts at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Texas Roller Derby Thunderdome, 1131 South Loop 4 in Buda.
We recently profiled Jenna Johnson, aka Milla Juke-a-Bitch, one of the veteran players of the league, which is credited with helping relaunch roller derby into the 21st century.
The tryout is open to anyone 21 years and older who is female-identifying, non-binary or transgender, and no experience is necessary. (We found out in an episode of "I Love You So Much: The Austin360 Podcast" that Johnson, aka Milla, didn’t know how to skate when she started.)
The league charges $10 to try out, and skates and protective gear are available to rent for an additional $5. The skaters who are selected to move forward will begin an intensive three-month boot camp-style program where trainers teach them the skills needed to play.
