Here’s what’s happening in the Live Music Capital of the World this week.

OUR TOP PICKS

Friday: Hikes record release at Barracuda. The latest from Austin’s emotionally rich four-piece is called “Mahal Kita,” which means “I love you” in Tagalog, the mother tongue for the band’s Filipinx frontwoman, Nay Wilkins. With a thematic core centered around trauma recovery, it’s an introspective release loaded with pastoral pop meditations featuring dreamy vocals floating above lilting guitars, gentle rhythms and lovely melodic swells that occasionally break into technically mind-boggling instrumental passages. Hikes collaborators Kraken Quartet, who are featured on the album, and Christelle Bofale open. $12. 9 p.m. doors. 611 E Seventh St. barracudaaustin.com. — D.S.S.

Saturday: Terry Allen & the Panhandle Mystery Band at Paramount Theatre. Traditions come and go. Annual midwinter shows at marquee Austin venues by Willie Nelson and Alejandro Escovedo have taken a pause this time around, but we’re very glad to see Lubbock legend Allen returning for his fourth straight January show at the Paramount. What started in 2017 and 2018 as retrospective performances has evolved into a vehicle for new material. Last year, Allen premiered a not-yet-recorded batch of songs to much acclaim, and now all that stuff is on “Just Like Moby Dick,” due out next week. Its radiance is due in large part to Allen’s latest lineup of the Panhandle Mystery Band, an accomplished crew that includes dual bandleaders Charlie Sexton and Lloyd Maines; ace rhythm section Glenn Fukunaga and Davis McLarty; and sweet-soul singer Shannon McNally. $20-$42. 8 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org. — P.B.

Saturday: Big Freedia at Emo’s. Still shaking off the post-holiday doldrums? The NOLA “sissy bounce” queen’s latest jam, “Louder” (an Icona Pop collab), is the ultimate motivational body-rocker to help you kick 2020 into high gear with straight boss vibes. So round up your unruly girl gang and go put your “hands on the ground, azz in the air,” and let it all hang out. Gulf Coast soul powerhouse the Suffers and Me Nd Adam open. $25-$27. 8:30 p.m. doors. 2015 E. Riverside Drive. emosaustin.com. — D.S.S.

Saturday: Cup of Ambition: A Dolly Parton Birthday Bash at Barracuda. A benefit for homeless assistance nonprofit Front Steps, the second edition of this event, organized by KUTX’s Diedre Gott, has a lot to live up to after a gloriously enchanting and entertaining debut last year. But the lineup suggests it may be just as good this time around, with more than 20 artists on-board to sing Dolly classics with house band the Steep Cats. They include Wild Child’s Kelsey Wilson; Sweet Spirit’s Sabrina Ellis; Go Fever’s Acey Monaro and Ben Burdick; Moving Panoramas’ Leslie Sisson and Cara Tillman; My Jerusalem’s Jeff Klein; and soulful singer Tameca Jones. $15. 8 p.m. 611 E. Seventh St. barracudaaustin.com. — P.B.

Wednesday: Juliana Hatfield at 3Ten. After breaking through in the 1980s with the alt-rock/pop trio Blake Babies (whose members included the current president of Rounder Records), Hatfield emerged as an accomplished solo act in the 1990s with radio hits such as “My Sister.” She’s issued nearly 20 records since, including an impressive run in the last three years that has included two new discs of original material plus two fascinating cover collections. The latest, issued in November, features songs by the Police, but we’re more impressed with her 2018 set of Olivia Newton-John tunes, which feels like a perfect match of formative influence with next-generation artist. Emily Davis & the Murder Police open. $25-$30. 8 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com. — P.B.

Thursday: Mandolin Orange at ACL Live. A decade ago when I lived in the North Carolina Triangle, this husband-wife team of Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz were aspiring upstarts who made beautiful music with fiddle, mandolin, guitar and lovely vocal harmonies. It seemed like an uphill battle, trying to bring such subtly engaging sounds to a mass audience. But by the time I’d moved to Austin in 2014, they’d started playing small-club gigs here. With each successive record, the venues grew bigger, and festivals grew hip to them as well. “Tides of a Teardrop,” released earlier this year, broke open the floodgates, and now this little band that could is headlining the city’s marquee downtown venue. Kate Rhudy opens. $24.50-$39.50. 8 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com. — P.B.
