Austin360 On The Record is a weekly roundup of new, recent and upcoming releases by local and Austin-associated recording artists.

OUT THIS WEEK

Texas Tycoons, “Comin’ In Hot.” The Tycoons formed specifically to play (as its name suggests) Texas music, serving up classics by everyone from Willie Nelson to Buddy Holly to ZZ Top. But when a bunch of friends spend years playing cover tunes together, it’s probably only natural that they start thinking about doing originals, too. Ringleader Paul Minor (Superego All-Stars, Roman Candle, the Urge, etc.) brought in 10 songs to a Tycoons crew that included ace keyboardist Matt Hubbard as producer. Minor shares lead vocals with fellow guitarist Landis Armstrong, while veteran locals Matt Eskey on bass and Kevin Lance on drums anchor the rhythms. The participants can vary for their Monday-night residency at the White Horse (Fastball’s Tony Scalzo is among those who’ve turned up often), but this core quintet suits the material on “Comin’ In Hot” well, from the title track’s road-ramblin’ blues-rock to the sweetly jangling guitar-pop of “Here I Am” to the Tex-Mex-flavored “All You Wanna Do Is Dance” to the old-school soul nugget “All the Time in the World.” The Tycoons tap in to a deep Doug Sahm vibe on the album-closing “Lone Star Soul,” which Minor co-wrote with Jason Robert Blum. Release show Jan. 4 at White Horse. Here’s the track “Made to Be Broken”:

Joanna Howerton & Michael Cross, “A New Love Begins.” Keyboard/accordion player Howerton and acoustic guitarist Cross focus on sweetly soulful original tunes that highlight the appealing blend of their vocal harmonies.
