Here’s what’s happening in the Live Music Capital of the World this week.

OUR TOP PICKS

Friday: Longhorn City Limits with Black Pumas. After a year spent thrilling audiences across the country and around the world with an unbroken streak of sold-out shows, Austin’s red-hot Black Pumas just nabbed a Grammy nomination for best new artist. The group will make a triumphant homecoming Friday, blessing Longhorn nation with their revelatory rock and simmering soul during a post-game performance on the University of Texas campus. Black Pumas will perform at about 2:30 p.m., depending on when the game against Texas Tech ends. Austin’s Latin rock lifers, Vallejo, will play before the game at 9:30 a.m. Free. 2313 Red River St. texassports.com. — D.S.S.

Friday: Go Fever at Stay Gold. Our Austin360 Artist of the Month back in February, the energetic indie-pop band is warming up the late-fall season with a four-week residency at one of East Austin’s coolest venues. Joining them for the kickoff are Velvet Nudes (featuring Sabrina Ellis, the omnipresent Sweet Spirit/Giant Dog/Heart Bones singer) and Sasha & the Valentines. Future installments will showcase Croy & the Boys (Dec. 6), Mobley (Dec. 13) and a "super secret special guest" (Dec. 20). $5. 10 p.m. 1910 E. Cesar Chavez St. staygoldaustin.com. — P.B.

Friday-Saturday: Austin Area Jazz Festival at Millennium Center and Mexican American Cultural Center. On Friday, smooth-jazz saxophone star Kirk Whalum headlines an evening event at the Millennium Center that also includes Tom Browne and Mike Hamilton. On Saturday, the action moves to the idyllic, lakeside grounds of the Mexican American Cultural Center, where internationally renowned percussionist (and Prince collaborator) Shelia E. tops the roster. Avery Sunshine, Walter Beasley, Jeff Bradshaw and Cindy Bradley also will perform on Saturday. Gates at 7 p.m. Friday, noon Saturday. Millennium Center: 1156 Hargrave St. MACC: 600 River St. austinareajazzfestival.com. — D.S.S.

Saturday: PJ Morton at Scoot Inn. Over the past few years, the smooth crooner and Maroon 5 keyboardist has been rising through the ranks of modern R&B/soul singers. He picked up a Grammy for slow-burning jam "How Deep Is Your Love" earlier this year. His 2019 release, "Paul," is a rich platter that lays Morton’s silky vocals over funky dance cuts, gospel-laced confessionals, searing soul protests and steamy bedroom R&B. Asiahn and Pell open. $25. 7 p.m. doors. 1308 E. Fourth St. scootinnaustin.com. — D.S.S.

Wednesday: BMI Songwriters in the Round at Saxon Pub. Shortly after performance rights organization BMI opened an Austin office this past spring, it began hosting regular songwriter showcases at the Saxon Pub, offering a good opportunity for locals to learn what the organization does for musicians. The lineups have featured an intriguing mix of genres and styles, and this bill is no exception. Joining soulful R&B-pop singer Mélat and Los Coast frontman Trey Privott are Robyn Shayne, Forrest Weiss, Roxann Woods and Julie No. Free. 6 p.m. Stick around for an 8 p.m. set by Ben Jones of Beat Root Revival ($10). 1320 S. Congress Ave. thesaxonpub.com. — P.B.

Wednesday: Up Around the Sun at Cactus Cafe. Legendary as a member of pioneering, circa-1980 Austin punk band Big Boys but in recent years focusing on intriguing folk-instrumental music, Tim Kerr joined with fellow Austinite Jerry Hagins on Up Around the Sun’s self-titled album a few years ago. For this show, they’ll team with Alaska fiddler and poet Ken Waldman, whose recent projects also include three volumes of timely political works titled "Trump Sonnets." $12-$15. 8:30 p.m. 2247 Guadalupe St. cactuscafe.org. — P.B.
