Holiday-themed bars are plentiful in Austin this year — from the kitschy Miracle on 5th Street pop-up to the W Austin’s Krampus-focused Secret Bar — but none have specifically focused on Hanukkah.
That is, until two of the co-owners of Kitty Cohen’s decided they wanted their Palm Springs-inspired patio bar in East Austin to transform for almost two weeks in December. Get Lit, their Hanukkah-themed pop-up, launches at Kitty Cohen’s starting on Dec. 18.
"I love all the holiday pop-up bars this time of the season, and I thought Hanukkah deserves one as well," Josh Brownfield, who dreamed up the concept with co-owner Jeremy Murray, said in a news release.
Murray said via email that the decorations for Get Lit will be Hanukkah-specific, so no doubt expect a menorah or two, as well as "a blue and silver explosion."
Kitty Cohen’s will also have a special menu of Hanukkah-inspired cocktails, such as Slivotinis and Latke Punch. The latter is a play on the traditional Hanukkah potato pancake dish and is made with potato vodka, apple cider, lemon, ginger liquor, cinnamon and bitters. Order it as a single drink, or get a whole punch bowl for your group.

And in place of one of the Kitty Cohen’s spritzes, try the Manischewitz Spritzer made with Manischewitz wine and bubbly. (If you fall in love with this effervescent drink and want to make it at home, Bon Appetit ran the recipe for it a few Decembers ago.)
The regular drink menu will still be available throughout the Get Lit pop-up, which kicks off a few days before Hanukkah begins on Dec. 22 and runs through Dec. 30, the last day of the Jewish holiday.
"Josh and I have big plans (for Get Lit), but since it's our first time I think we are exploring the scope of the decorations still," Murray said in the email.
A portion of the proceeds from Get Lit will benefit Shalom Austin, "the hub of Jewish life in Central Texas," according to the organization.
