The second Austin location of an entertainment venue with nearly 20 locations across the country opens next month in a prime part of the city — in a historic building at Sixth Street and Congress Avenue.
Punch Bowl Social will bring its "eat, drink and play" ethos to two levels downtown with a grand opening celebration on Dec. 14. Much like the North Austin location at the Domain, this one will be outfitted with plenty of opportunities to play: seven mini bowling lanes, three dart boards, two private karaoke rooms, a photo booth, classic arcade games, ping-pong and board games.
That’s in addition to a full food and drink menu with dishes such as a shrimp burger with Old Bay mayo. Though this Punch Bowl Social follows much of the same formula as the others, CEO Robert Thompson noted there are key differences, mainly in the design of the 19,850-square-foot, two-story spot.
"The area of the building where Punch Bowl Social will be was previously the menswear and housewares departments of a department store, so we’ve added nods to the past through various department store-inspired art pieces, including an articulating mannequin arm complete with cuff links, a housewares floor mural by local Austin artist Watson Murals, and vintage wire hanger art installations," he said.
Because it’s located in the historic Scarborough building where Brooks Brothers and Gold’s Gym once were situated, the new Punch Bowl Social also has art deco elements included in the design.

The Domain location of the the Denver-based chain opened in 2014. Thompson said he saw room in the Austin market to add a Punch Bowl Social in a different part of town.
"We wanted a location downtown from the beginning but were committed to waiting for an opportunity in the right area of the city," he said. "The historic Scarborough building is what we’ve been waiting for and aligns with our company’s desire to breathe new life into places with great stories."
At the grand opening celebration from 7 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 14, a live art installation, access to all games and a wide selection of food, drink and games will be included in the $20 ticket price. (The venue opens at 9 p.m. to people without tickets.) All of the ticket proceeds benefit the Andy Roddick Foundation. Purchase tickets at this link.
