Austinites might be more comfortable in Birkenstocks than Manolo Blahniks, but that doesn’t mean shoe designer Selena McCartney hasn’t made a home for herself here.


The San Antonio-born founder of the Art of Shoes designed shoes in New York City and Chicago before starting her own freelance company in Austin, where she also teaches shoe-making classes.


Earlier this year, we caught up with McCartney at one of her sneaker classes, where we found out about her design philosophy, why students travel from hundreds of miles to take her classes and what it’s like working as the lead designer on Katy Perry’s footwear collection.
