It’s difficult, if not darn near impossible, to imagine anyone reprising the late Heath Ledger’s nightmarish Joker character from the “Batman” franchise and doing the role any sort of justice, but the new teaser trailer for this summer’s “Joker” origin movie reveals Joaquin Phoenix to be up for the task.
The three-time Oscar nominee (“Gladiator,” “Walk the Line,” “The Master”) serves up some seriously creepy Commodus vibes as Arthur Fleck, a failed comedian turned sad sack sandwich sign spinner who wears clown make-up (to entice me into Jimmy Johns? No thank you) and gets beat up in an alleyway and, later, on the subway. When he becomes Christian Bale-level emaciated, you know that’s when the real crazy starts...
The glorious Zazie Beetz factors heavily in the trailer as a potential love interest (was that “Atlanta” co-star Brian Tyree Henry I spotted?!) and Robert DiNero features as a talk show host.
Todd Phillips (“The Hangover”) wrote, directed and produced the film, with additional writing credits to Scott Silver (“8 Mile,” “The Fighter”) and Bradley Cooper on the production team.
“Is it just me or is it getting crazier out there?”
"Joker" will be released in theaters on October 4.
