What would a "Jaws"-themed cocktail taste like? Or one inspired by the Robin Williams movie "Jumanji"?
One of East Austin’s most well-regarded cocktail bars, Whisler’s, switches out its drinks menu with each new season — and for these hot August days, it has come up with a fun conceptual menu based around beloved films.
Whisler’s A Night at the Drive In features about a half dozen drinks the entire bar staff collaborated on to "hearken back to the lazy days of summer — sitting on top of cars at an open air drive in. It's hot, languid and sexy. You're hanging out with your homies — or maybe having that summer fling that you’ll always remember," according to the bar.
Of course, we’re already deep in the thick of a lazy summer season. But the cocktails, each one showcasing a different spirit, are certainly going to transport us: Whisler’s likes to use each ingredient to tell a story.
In this case, the bar staff chose a few favorite classic films to highlight and didn’t just name each of the drinks after them. The cocktails "encapsulate the essence of each (movie) through the tasting notes of the spirits and inspired flavors," according to Whisler’s.
For instance, the "Jaws"-inspired drink, Open Water, is exactly the sort of blue-hued, rum-based tropical cocktail we’d be sipping on the beach at Amity Island, blissfully unaware of the gigantic man-eating shark waiting to devour us. And Catbus, a boozy tribute to Hayao Miyazaki's "My Neighbor Totoro," naturally contains sake, a Japanese rice wine, along with citrus, white tea and peach.

Garnished with a shark-shaped gummy.
Conceptual cocktail menus can be hard to do, but other top Austin bars that have successfully pulled them off include Midnight Cowboy, which created an extensive menu around the concept of conversation last winter.
