The owner of a restaurant in the former Al Fico space on East Second Street wanted to remember the formative years he spent in New York City and decided to open Gotham as a tribute to them.

Nick Goulding, who is also the owner of Café Malta in Southwest Austin, recently opened Gotham’s doors  for happy hour and dinner but has plans to offer lunch and brunch in the future as well. Gotham "recreates the flavors, sights, and sounds of some of his favorite New York bars and restaurants," according to a press release.

"There were a handful of places, old established places like Fanelli Cafe and Pete’s Tavern and Raoul’s and McSorley’s, where you could sit and see a cross-section of the city," Goulding, who lived in New York from 1988 to 2004, said in the release. "Very democratic places, very equalizing, because when you want a drink and a meal you’re in the same boat as anyone else, and the differences of politics and income just sort of fade away."

Expect a range of classic New York-style meals at Gotham, including Reuben sandwiches, Manhattan-style clam chowder, oysters on the half-shell and chicken and waffles. With Al Fico’s wood-burning pizza oven still in operation, Gotham is also turning out pizza and other tavern fare such as burgers and pasta.

Drinks at the East Austin eatery include creative cocktails, mostly local beers and a multi-region wine list. The cocktail list, in particular, stands out, with fun drinks like the Special Hug (Mezcal Ilegal, Grind Espresso liqueur, milk and chocolate bitters).

Goulding and his wife, Jessica, opened Café Malta as a nod to the Mediterranean cuisines of Italy, Spain and beyond, about six and a half years ago. The short-lived Al Fico focused on Italian food.

Gotham, located at 1700 E. Second St., is open 3:30 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Tuesday-Thursday and 3:30 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit gothamatx.com.
