University of Texas lecturer Kate Biberdorf has a reputation for blowing stuff up.

The chemistry professor labels herself a pyromaniac and leads explosive science demonstrations in her classrooms. Last week, "Kate the Chemist" got to take her lab space to New York City for an appearance on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Biberdorf, who was named one of the 2017 "Texas 10" professors, led the talk show host through three live experiments mixing chemicals and handling a blowtorch. The pair created a mixture named "Elephant’s Toothpaste," a colorful foamy concoction that spews up from the beakers when a catalyst is added.

Next, they lit balloons filled with flammable gas on fire for bright, loud explosions. But the highlight of the segment comes when Biberdorf "breathes fire" by spewing cornstarch onto a blow torch. She even convinced Colbert to try it too, but tamed the experiment a little by using flour.
