It can be easy to get so caught up in Austin’s lively restaurant scene that you overlook the influence local growers have on the city’s food system.
If you’ve ever taken a Saturday to visit the Sustainable Food Center’s farmers’ market, however, you’re well aware.
And Parade magazine is, too.
The publication recently recognized Austin’s farmers’ market as one of the top 25 in the country, noting its offerings from "hyper-local ranchers" like "longhorn chili," Texas pecans and beef.
Parade said it looked for farmers’ markets where the majority of sellers were local growers and offering a wide variety of produce and goods to choose from. It also looked for markets where prepared foods were made from local ingredients.
All of the markets recognized by Parade have a food justice program, and many offer educational food classes, like Austin’s "Happy Kitchen" program.
The Sustainable Food Center’s market boasts a variety of flowers, soaps, meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, jams, salsas and all kinds of ready-to-eat foods with local cultural influence.
You can get a pierogi. And you can get a taco too.
Both its downtown location at Republic Square and its Sunset Valley location make great spots for a picnic and are open Saturdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., all year long, rain or shine.
