A not-so-long time ago, in a movie theater not so far away (depending on traffic), "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" director Rian Johnson offered a screaming, shouting Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar audience the promise that their recorded yells would be used in the next "Star Wars" film.

This week, on the red carpet for the South By Southwest screening of "The Director and the Jedi," Johnson revealed which scene from "Last Jedi" features Austin’s hoots and hollers.

It’s the Canto Bight scene.

More specifically, the fathier race scene, where Finn and Rose are out on the balcony.

As Johnson explained to Austin 360 video journalist Alyssa Vidales:

"So basically i went to this screening and I got up in front of everyone, it was a theater full of people, and with my iPhone, said, ‘Do you guys want to be in a ‘Star Wars’ movie?’

"And I recorded them cheering as a crowd, and then in the casino scene in the movie, when they’re out on the balcony and they're looking at the race track, that crowd has some of an Austin movie theater crowd."

Johnson also added that when he thinks of Austin, he thinks of it first and foremost as "a movie town," dating back to his first Fantastic Fest visit. Hear more at the video up top.
