It’s not quite a full reunion, but the Smashing Pumpkins lineup that will play the Erwin Center on July 16 will be the closest approximation to the one that recorded the band’s biggest hits in the 1990s.
The Austin date will be the third of 36 shows the band has booked from July 12 to Sept. 7. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, via the Erwin Center’s box-office website. Ticket prices have not yet been announced.
Joining frontman Billy Corgan for the band’s summer tour is co-founding guitarist James Iha, who played on multi-platinum-selling albums such as “Siamese Dream” and “Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” but last toured with the group in 2000. Classic-era drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, who has toured occasionally with Corgan in a Pumpkins lineup that also included recent recruit Jeff Schroeder, also is aboard, as is Schroeder.
Notably absent is D’Arcy Wretzky, who hasn’t played with the group since 1999. A Rolling Stone interview with Wretzky this week details continued bad blood between her and Corgan, including contentious accounts of her potential participation in this tour, and notes that Jack Bates will be the touring bassist with the band.
Corgan played Bass Concert Hall with an abbreviated acoustic lineup in 2016, and appeared with a different full-band Pumpkins lineup during South by Southwest in 2013.
