Not that we would know — being that we don’t bark, gambol on four legs or have a wagging tail — but Austin is the best city in the country to be a dog. Not just to own a dog, which we already know.
"America’s Best Cities to Be a Dog," featuring our fur baby-friendly city as number one, is a blog post published to the website of a business called Alen, probably because the company sells air filters that can remove all the dog dander and such from the air. The site did its homework, too, coming up with its ranking through research.
We can’t help but agree that Austin is a pretty awesome place for dogs to live.
"Texas as a whole doesn’t have any dog breed restrictions. Hooray!" the blog post reads. "Out of all of the Lone Star State’s cities, Austin is the best for dog-lovers. Its 167 restaurants, 15 dog parks, five hiking trails, three tours, and seven pet-friendly stores that welcome dogs provide a lot of options for visitors and residents to bring their dogs along most places they go."
Considering that restaurants, at least, are constantly opening and closing in this fickle town, we shouldn’t consider the numbers completely up-to-date. But AlenCorp made the rankings based on data from three worthy websites: the BSL census (breed-specific legislation), nokillnetwork.org and BringFido.com (which, for what it’s worth, lists 315 restaurants in Austin as being dog-friendly. That’s a lot).
Other cities where our furry friends will live happily? These include Phoenix, New York and Philadelphia. Each of the rankings includes Alen’s favorite dog-friendly activity, and in Austin, that’s patio dining at Perla’s with your pooch. Perla’s is a little expensive for an average meal, but there are plenty of other restaurants to choose from, of course.
Not included in the article — but probably should have been, for all the research put into it — is that Austin is the country’s largest no-kill city, meaning that no less than 90 percent of the dogs in local shelters are adopted out. No wonder dogs love our city so much.
