Press Cleaners decided to crown the Fashion Capital of Texas. And it chose Austin.
Why do we deserve such a title?
Press Cleaners’ John Egan looked at the number of general clothing stores per 100,000 residents in Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. It used 2014 U.S. Census Bureau data to get this information.
According to the Census, we have 227 clothing stores, or 11.7 per 100,000 people.
Dallas-Fort Worth has 652 stores, or 9.4 per 100,000 people.
Houston has 561 stores or 8.5 per 100,000 people.
And San Antonio has 188 stores or 8. 1 per 100,000 people.
You can read more about this on the Press Cleaners blog.
Of course, if you’re only looking at general clothing stores, you might not be looking at the number of more specific stores (for women-only, for example) that cities have.
You also might be missing the fashion scene in those cities. Egan does point out that we have Austin Fashion Week, now Fashion X, which is happening right now.
We also have a number of designers that are coming out of University of Texas and showing at the UT Fashion Show as well as designers that flock to Austin for our creative vibe.
One thing designers have repeatedly said to me is that they have trouble finding people and companies in Austin to make their clothing. We just don’t have the clothing manufacturing system like a New York or Los Angeles has.
