Sometimes the big musical rewards come from unexpected places. When we spoke with co-founding R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills on Thursday afternoon before his participation in the Big Star’s Third concert on Friday at Central Presbyterian Church during South by Southwest, Mills mentioned that one of the greatest joys of being involved with that all-star tribute collective has been the discovery of younger artists such as North Carolina’s Brett Harris, Django Haskins and Skylar Gudasz.

We caught up with Gudasz, who released her debut full-length record last year, on Wednesday afternoon at the classic Austin bar Donn’s Depot. Sitting at the piano where Chris Gage has held down his Monday residency for more than 20 years, Gudasz delivered a solo piano rendition of her song “I Want to Be With You in the Darkness” that filled an already magical room with beautiful music.

We’ll have more of our interview with Mills Friday morning on Austin 360. And if you want to hear more from Gudasz, she plays an 8:40 p.m. set at Central Presbyterian on Friday before the Big Star tribute.
