When it comes to Austin TV news, KVUE is king, according to the latest Nielsen ratings.

The city’s ABC station was No. 1 at 4:30 a.m., 5 a.m., 6 a.m., middays, 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. during the recently completed May "sweeps" period.

NBC affiliate KXAN finished in first place at 6 p.m.

Viewership levels during May and three other sweeps months – February, July and November – help determine what advertisers pay for commercials.

This time around, mornings were an especially bright spot for most stations, with ratings for several newscasts growing by double-digit percentages year to year. A few examples: KXAN was up 50 percent at 4:30 a.m.; KEYE grew 60 percent at 5 a.m.; and KVUE rocketed 62 percent at 6 a.m.

Later in the day, KVUE’s win at 5 p.m. marked its first victory in that time slot in almost two years – since Oprah Winfrey’s talk show, the lead-in to "KVUE News at 5" for many years, came to an end.

"At KVUE, we work every day to earn the trust of our viewers," president and general manager Patti Smith said. "It’s humbling and rewarding to know that the citizens of Central Texas have overwhelmingly acknowledged our commitment to this public service."

While KXAN slid to second place at 5 p.m., its winning streak at 6 p.m. remains intact, powered in part by a number of heavily promoted special reports.

"We continue to focus our efforts on how best to deliver local news that provides our viewers interesting and valuable depth, and investigations that make our community a better place to live," said Eric Lassberg, president and general manager of KXAN and sister stations KNVA and KBVO. "Thus, it is highly encouraging to see our viewers responding to us with the growth in May during KXAN’s morning news and late news, and the No. 1 position at 6 p.m., where we place our investigative pieces."

And at 10 p.m., KVUE is home to the city’s most-watched newscast, regardless of time slot, drawing an average of nearly 40,000 viewers each weekday evening.

Other highlights:KTBC handily beats KNVA in the 9 p.m. news race, with more than three times as many viewers."Good Morning America" on KVUE is Austin’s No. 1 network morning show, while "NBC Nightly News" on KXAN is the city’s preferred evening network newscast.Weekends, KVUE’s newscasts win in virtually all time periods.KEYE has the city’s most-watched primetime lineup, followed by KVUE, KXAN and then KTBC."The Following’s" finale on KTBC delivered a sizable audience, beating offerings on all other broadcast networks.Primetime ratings grew significantly both Saturdays and Sundays on KTBC, up 25 percent and 67 percent, respectively, compared to February.Late nights, KVUE comes out on top, then KXAN, KEYE and KTBC.
