In 2003, Jamie Amelio toured the Cambodian sites. At the Angkor Wat temple complex in Siem Reap, she encountered a little girl.
"She asked me for a dollar," the Lakeway resident remembers. "I asked what she wanted it for. She said school. I asked her to show me the school."
A guide took Amelio, now 47 and mother of six, to look at the classrooms.
"There were five to 10 kids to a desk — and no teacher," she recalls. "I decided then I wanted to help."
