The parking lot at a strip shopping center in a big Texas city — not Austin — appeared to offer no handicapped spaces.

Startled, I dropped Dad off as close to the bistro as possible, while my partner, Kip, helped him out of the car to his walker. At painfully slow speed, they improvised an entrance through two closely parked cars, up a steep curb and through tightly packed — but on this steamy afternoon, empty — sidewalk seating.
