Verdi’s "A Masked Ball," Gounod’s "Romeo and Juliet" anf Mozart’s "Don Giovanni" are on Austin Lyric Opera’s 2014-2015, opera officials announced Friday.
And with "A Masked Ball," ALO will unveils its first completely new production in eight years — a production with sets driven entirely by digital projections.
Acclaimed designer Wendall K. Harrington — whose wide-ranging credits in projection design include creating sets for Lyric Opera of Chicago and the 1984 Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense" tour — will develop a wholly digitally projected set for "A Masked Ball."
Harrington’s participation comes through a new and developing partnership between ALO and the University of Texas, where Harrington will serve as artist-in residence in fall 2014 in UT’s department of theater and dance.
"A Masked Ball" will also feature debut artist tenor Dominick Chenes, as Riccardo, and Mardi Byers as Amelia, returning to Austin following her company debut in ALO’s upcoming production of "Tosca," opening Jan. 30 at the Long Center.
ALO artistic direactor and principal conductor Richard Buckley will lead all of the company’s 2014-2015 season.
