Proceeds from the car2go Marathon Relay on Sept. 22 will benefit two Austin non-profits - one well established and the other new to the city, race organizers announced Thursday.

The Livestrong Foundation, the Austin-based non-profit organization that works to help people whose lives are affected by cancer, and Back On My Feet, a non-profit that uses running as a way to help homeless people regain independence, will both benefit from the race. Car2go and Whole Foods Markets are sponsoring the event.

The relay is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Sept. 22.

Teams of two to six will run six 4.37-mile loops that add up to a full marathon. Solo participants can also race one loop of the course - the Whole Foods Market Loop. The course begins and ends on Riverside Drive, across from Auditorium Shores in downtown Austin. A finish line festival will include live music, entertainment, food and drinks.

Livestrong announced in February it was breaking ties with the Austin Marathon and looking to partner with more accessible, beginner-friendly events.

"It’s a chance for us to partner with an up-and-coming non-profit whose mission we admire tremendously," said Livestrong spokesman Andrew Tanker.

At Livestrong, proceeds from the race will be used to fund free cancer support services for people in-person in Austin and online around the country.

At Back On My Feet, proceeds will be used to help fund training and other program costs for program members. Right now, the Austin chapter of the Philadelphia-based organization is working with about 30 people who live at downtown shelters.

"Partnering with an organization as established as Livestrong is great for us," said Elise Lampert, spokeswoman for Back On My Feet.

Registration for the car2go Marathon Relay is open until 4 p.m. Sept. 21 online at www.themarathonrelay.com and at Whole Foods Market, 525 N. Lamar Boulevard. Entry fee is $270 per team; entry into the individual loop is $45 (fees increase Sept. 8).

Prizes will be awarded to winning teams in 19 divisions, including include men’s, women’s, mixed fitness and just for fun categories, and the winners of the Whole Foods Market Loop. MapMyRun members will be timed the final 400 meters for additional prizes.
