Remember track and field day at school when you were a kid? Everyone - not just the fastest or strongest kids - got to participate in a school-wide athletic competition.
That’s the idea behind the Luke’s All-Comers Track Series, which kicks off May 31.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve never raced in a meet before. It’s all about participation and fun, and the meets are a great way to improve road race times. (And unlike what you may have experienced in elementary school, the crowds here are supportive.)
The USATF-sanctioned meets will take place every other Friday night through Aug. 9 at the Texas School for the Deaf, 1102 South Congress Avenue. The track is in the back of the complex.
Meets are scheduled for May 31, June 14, June 28, July 12, July 26 and Aug. 9. Registration opens at 4:30 p.m. the day of the meet, and all participants must be registered 30 minutes prior to their event. The first event starts at 6 p.m.
Events include shot put, discus, high jump, long jump, 100 meters, 200 meters, 800 meters, 3,000 meters, 3,200 meters and the 4 by 400 relay. Special heats will be held for kids 10 and under if participation warrants.
All ages and ability levels are welcome. Registration is $10 for adults, $8 for students or $5 for youth 12 and under, or $50 for the series (shirt included.) For more information go to www.lukeslocker.com.
