The countdown for Austin’s first Trader Joe’s has officially begun.
Today, the California-based grocer announced that its first Central Texas store — to be located at 2805 Bee Caves Road in Rollingwood, not far from downtown Austin — will open on Friday, Sept. 20.
That 11,000 square-foot location was the former home of a Sprouts grocery store, and though it wasn’t the first Trader Joe’s announced for Austin, it will be the first to open. Trader Joe’s made a splash last year when it announced that it would open a store in the Seaholm development in downtown, not far from the Whole Foods flagship. The store should break ground sometime this year but won’t open for some time.
Now, the chain has plans for at least two area stores, including a possible third, yet unconfirmed location in the Arboretum. Applications for jobs at the Rollingwood location will be accepted in August, but the store hasn’t announced any more details about how many jobs they will need to fill.
There are now more than 390 stores in 35 states. Trader Joe’s has expanded aggressively in Texas in the past few years, and Austin is the last major Texas city to get its own store.
