More than 28,000 people in the Austin area work at fast food restaurants, and some of them will be going on strike today as part of a national protest of low wages. Workers and activistis are participating in a march at noon today along Guadalupe Street near the University of Texas campus.

The Mrs. Baird’s Bakery Outlet on Tillery Street is closing this week after more than 60 years of selling discounted baked goods. Out near Lake Travis, which is only eight feet above its all-time low, Carlos ‘n Charlie’s has closed its doors. (It’s hard to believe how low the lake is until you see the pictures.)

In other business news, a U.S. district judge has ruled that, despite the efforts of the California-based Umami Burger, you cannot trademark the word "umami" and prevent places like Umami Mia Pizzeria from using it in their name.

Matthew Odam says that the Bonneville is just a block away from being considered as one of downtown Austin’s top culinary hotspots, and in tomorrow’s paper, he reveals his top 12 burgers in the city.

Emma Janzen introduces us to one of Texas’ newest gins, and she takes us inside the Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co., which opens Friday on West Oltorf Street with 10 of their craft beers on tap. She also tries to answer a question that has been perplexing us lately: How to get a canned beer out of those harder plastic holders that several local breweries, including Austin Beerworks and Hops and Grain use. In a video on her Liquid Austin blog, Michael Graham of Austin Beerworks says it’s as easy as "pulling out and away," but if I had a dollar for every time I’ve tried that method and still struggled to break a beer free, I could probably buy a $9 six-pack.
